Since 1990, Detail Mold & Manufacturing has been providing precision mold design and fabrication services for the fiber optic and medical industries. Our specialized equipment is housed in a climate controlled environment to ensure that it maintains the stability needed to achieve up to .0001" (2 micron) tolerances. We are able to fabricate molds measuring as large as 30" x 40" x 30" and weighing up to 7,500 lbs. We build using hardened tool steel to meet SPI Class 101 standards for high volume production, and are also capable of fabricating aluminum versions for shorter runs or for prototyping purposes. Hot runner molds, complex multi-cavity molds, as well as insert and over-mold tools are only a few examples of the capabilities of our master toolmakers and designers.

Our skilled employees and high-end equipment can excel at any job. Our High-Speed mills and cutting techniques can save you time and money over older manufacturing techniques. With our 4th axis capabilities we can machine your parts without the need of costly additional set-ups as well as preform precision operations at previously difficult angles. We are also equipped to Hard Mill in metals up to 60 Rockwell as well as machine Graphite for Sinker EDM’s. We can hold 0.0002 in the Micro Mills and approximately 0.0004 in our larger mills.

While standard CNC Lathes are capable of turning a part and producing round products at lower costs that milling, Live Tooling allows us to preform secondary machining operations to the part while it is being turned. This process is one of the ways we are working to keep your costs low and meet your quick turn around and high precision needs. We can currently accommodate project sizes ranging up to 18’ long and 8” in diameter.

Whether your needs are for tight tolerance EDM parts or to machine hardened material, we have the equipment, tooling, and Master Tool Makers to get your job done. To cut cost to our customers and to speed production as well as eliminate part-to-part changes we use 0-Turn tooling from Erowa. This eliminates costly set-up time and helps to improve accuracy and repeatability. Combining the 0-Turn tooling with our new, larger tool changers, we are equipped to handle your production Die Sink needs as well.

Wire EDM is one of the fastest growing departments here at Detail Mold & Manufacturing. Jan 2017, we took delivery of our newest machine, Makino U53j, with plans to continue expanding this department this year. Whether your needs are to hold tolerances of 0.00005 or high capacity, unattended production runs, we are ready to meet your needs. We have cutting capacities ranging from 21.5” x 14.5” with a 9” height to a 12.5” x 8.5” with a height of 11.5”. Each of our machines are capable of running varying degrees of multi axis programs as well. We are capable of producing surface finishes of 4.0 micro inches. Additive Manufacturing is the fastest growing technology in the manufacturing industry. With the ability to directly print your parts onto build plates, there is now a growing need for cutting the parts from the build plates. This is just one more service we can offer with our EDM Wire machines.

EDM Drilling uses the spark from a copper or brass tube electrode to quickly and accurately produce holes in any highly conductive metal. This process is especially useful for small holes and for working in hardened material. Our current hole sizes range from .008” up to .125”and can have depths up too 200x the diameter accurately. When paired with the full CNC control, adding holes to difficult jobs just became much easier.

One of the services we offer here at Detail Mold is Laser Welding. We can weld with wire sizes ranging from 0.003 up to about 0.03. This allows us to expertly seal up cracks in tools that may have otherwise needed to be rebuilt, as well as to be able to build up worn parts so that they may be machined back into tolerance. We routinely perform welding services for the medical industry as well as mold repair and many others. We stock filler rod for all common metals this includes aluminum, beryllium copper, brass, and many others. We are ready to service your jobs whether they are large or small.

That is why we have invested in a state of the art, Hexagon Metrology Optiv 443 Dual z Vision and touch CMM. We have a work surface of 400 x 400 x300mm. This machine has linear scales with 10nm resolution as well as high resolution CCD camera and Chromatic Whitelight Sensor. By including this technology in our shop, we are now able to check electrodes, inserts, molds, or finished products with extreme accuracy. The MPE for the Vison Sensor is Ex,Ey= 1.5=L/400, EXY=1.9=L/250, Ez= 1.9=L200. The MPE for the touch probe is MPEe=1.9=L/250, MPEp= 1.9, MPEthp= 2.9 (78 sec).
